Christhill Dairy Farm Master Plan
The Christhill Dairy Farm has been in operation for two generations now. As it gets passed to the third generation, significant investment to bring the farm up-to-date is being undertaken. The herd of 55-60 Holstein dairy cows have been in the original bank barn with a quanset hut addition for many years. The Christie’s are looking at converting their tie-stall operation into a robotic milking operation for their same small herd with the option to expand in the future.
VELD architect is assisting them with finding the ideal location on the very hilly farm, creating design drawings in co-ordination with equipment suppliers, creating a permit drawing set, and a further construction drawing set. We are working together to find creative solutions to a tight farmyard, hilly sites, and a desire to use some of the traditional systems they currently have on the farm that work extremely well. We are also working to find alternative uses for the bank barn to ensure it remains as an icon on the property as well as a productive building.
We are currently evaluating the pros and cons of various locations on the farm and barn styles (free-stall w/ compost, bedded pack, sand, etc.). The drawings included here are representative of our standard, thorough site analysis of wind, topography, sun, infrastructure, etc that VELD provide prior to making any final decisions.
