Harry Class Community Pool
The Harry Class Community Pool is the largest outdoor public pool in Ontario. As project captain at John MacDonald Architect Krista created a central corridor through the historic change house to allow visitors quick access to the pool deck. The corridor begins with reception and flows through to the showers with curved walls it feels like a river through the building. We added a family change room and improved the existing women’s and men’s change room. We implemented energy saving measures like occupancy and daylight sensors on the lights, to take advantage of the great historic skylights that make this change house filled with sunlight.
The pool deck was also expanded to accommodate more spectators and more leisurely visits to the pool. The budget did not allow anything more than a chain link fence around the deck so I had to be creative and designed curved fence posts with cedar decking to make benches all along the perimeter of the pool deck. We also added some great features to the deck, including the outdoor shower, sunbathing mound, and birthday area. The project came in on budget and on time for opening in summer 2011.
