Our Farm
Our Farm is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating community through sustainable agriculture. They are a CSA (community supported agriculture) group looking to have their very “own farm” to share with friends and community, They are located just outside Waterloo on Erbsville road. VELD is assisting with master planning of the 12 acre site (which they are renting from KW habitat) as well as designing a tool shed with the grant money they have received this year.
The master plan involves enhancing the existing features on the property, taking advantage of the views, and making a very hilly site barrier-free accessible for all the visitors and volunteers. Using both barrier-free slopes and keyline design the site has been laid out for edible forests. They intend to have pick-your-own flowers, and vegetable patches on the hill that can be seen as you leave Waterloo. They would like to enhance the already stated willow grove in the low spot on the site, and use the hill for a natural amphitheatre space in the future. Our Farm even hopes to bring the community to this place through sports fields. This mater plan is a vision that might be implemented over many years to come and the community around “Our Farm” continues to grow.
Nestled into the hill will be the main community/farm building. It will house tool storage, buried cold storage, and vegetable sales and preparation. At the heart of the barn will be a fireplace and hearth where community can gather around. The building aims to be passively ventilated, lighted, and heated. Our Farm hopes to host workshops and community events in this building in the future.
